Sow bugs

admin asked 1 year ago

I  started a straw bale compost pile in late January that is ready for screening. It is full of what I think are sow bugs. I’m concerned that the bugs will damage my plants. What shall I do?

Answer from JZ:

As you screen the sow bugs will scatter to safety. They prefer damp, dark places, so
from my point of view, not a problem.

If your setup was a hot process pile, then the compost ought to go through a 4-6wk., finishing / curing process. You could cure in a trash can composter as pictured here: NMSU: Bernalillo County Master Composters: Plastic Container Bin

That would also, give the insects time to scatter.
